Mortirolo

Fourteen gears, 1,710 grams. The climber's gearbox.

14 gears · 568% range · 1,710 g · 210 Nm input

Mortirolo 14-speed gearbox unit in orange anodized aluminum, drive side with splined input shaft

The Mortirolo is named after the climb that decides races, and it is built for riders who spend their time going up. Fourteen gears across a 568% range, with tight 14.3% steps that let you hold cadence within a few RPM on a long ascent, in a unit that weighs 1,710 grams with oil.

Weight came out of the Mortirolo through section analysis, not omission. The thin-wall housing keeps full sealing and the same double-lip seal package as our trail units; the gearset runs a finer tooth module with narrower faces, appropriate to XC pedaling loads rather than bike-park impacts. The 210 Nm input rating still clears hard out-of-saddle efforts with margin.

The result is a drivetrain that weighs in close to a conventional XC group once you remove the cassette, derailleur, and shifter hardware it replaces — but with its mass at the crank instead of the rear axle, and with no exposed parts to foul, bend, or re-index mid-race.

Engineering notes

The Mortirolo's housing is machined to a 2.2 mm nominal wall — about as thin as we can go while passing our full impact protocol — with internal ribbing carrying bearing loads into the mount face. Gears are narrower and run a finer module, paired with a low-viscosity oil blend to cut churning losses at high cadence.

Fourteen gears at 14.3% steps exist for one reason: holding a precise cadence on long climbs. The 568% range means a single setup covers everything from seated switchback grinds to a full sprint.
